just like riding a bike
Mar. 9th, 2026 07:29 pmalmost a whole month ago, i had a conversation with
shyshyshiloh about our respective musical backgrounds. talking about my music experience really had me reflecting on my relationship to music and midway through a reply to his comment i felt like i really needed to arrange something. sorry for the very late reply!
i finished notating the bones of this in basically a few days with an energy that i can only describe as frenzied. this entire score was notated solely at a laptop; i could not bring myself to actually sit at a piano ironically (it was a rough week and also i am crazy). after that week, i edited the score (at the piano) and realized that some of the things i wrote either were either unintuitive, not musical, or just straight up annoying to play so a lot of work was put into simplifying and streamlining it.
for the past four years i haven’t had the urge or motivation to sit down and arrange something so it felt really good to channel some creative energy into this. my current foray into writing fanfiction feels a lot like when i first started arranging. i had no formal music theory/composition education at the time (i mostly learned from youtube) so i really felt like i was wandering blind. looking back on my past arrangements, i’m a little more hopeful for my journey as a writer. my old scores are kind of wildly inaccurate (maybe i’ll do a dw post on them someday haha) but i’m honestly really proud of myself. i can clearly see improvement with each one and even though it was a difficult learning process, i persevered and created things that made me happy, even if they weren’t very good. formal music theory education has really made the process a whole lot easier and faster though! i'm still (and forever will be) in the process of learning how to arrange in a way that is interesting and musical and creative, but i'm overall pretty happy with how this turned out.
if by some chance, somebody reads this and is interested in playing this piece or has questions on the score or the arranging process, feel free to ask! i tried to make the score as legible as possible but i’ve still never taken any classes on composition so i don’t really know what i’m doing.
lastly, shoutout to sohyun's pen and that introduction signal where she immediately flirts with yooyeon for getting me to make music again.
